Trauma

Most people will experience a stressful, distressing, or traumatic event in their lifetime. When distressing life events occur, it can change how our minds and bodies relate and respond to the world around us. Trauma is painful and can impact many areas of life, such as relationships, work, family, hobbies, school, and our overall feeling of safety. At R & S Health Initiative, we are trained in evidence-based approaches to help people begin healing and reprocessing distressing and traumatic experiences.  Some of these approaches consist of EMDR, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a research-based method that has been utilized for over 20 years. A number of organizations, such as the American Psychological Association and the World Health Organization, now recognize EMDR as an effective treatment approach. EMDR supports the brain in reprocessing how it communicates between the amygdala (our alarm system), hippocampus (learning and memory), and the prefrontal cortex (thinking and reasoning) to help relieve distressing images, thoughts, and emotions.

EMDR therapy can help with a number of concerns:

  • Grief/loss

  • PTSD/stress related issues

  • Anxiety

  • Sexual concerns

  • Abuse and assault

  • Phobias

  • Panic attacks

  • Depression

  • Dissociation

  • Chronic illness or pain

  • Eating disorders

  • Low self-worth
